Kinship Data

Fact sheet created by the Congressional Research Service presenting data about kinship care and families in the U.S.

U.S. Census Bureau report providing data about the number of children who live with their grandparents, and characteristics of those families. As of 2021, roughly 3.3% of adults aged 30 or over lived with grandchildren. The report includes data broken down by race, region, state, county, age and sex of grandparent, length of time a child lives with grandparents, family structure, disability status, socioeconomic status, and historical trends.

This report explores the complexity of households in which grandparents and grandchildren live together. It uses data from the 2010 Census, the American Community Survey (ACS), the Current Population Survey (CPS), and the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP).
